in the August 21st special election
for California's 37th
Congressional District.

Four years into the war in Iraq, the Pentagon finally labeled it a "civil war." If only that were the case. The truth is that we have put ourselves in the middle of a religious war between Sunnis and Shiites that has raged well over a millenium.

A surge of 25,000 or 50,000 or even 100,000 troops for six months or a year or even two years cannot possibly resolve this conflict. To speak of the US "winning" such a war makes as much sense as betting on the refs to win the Super Bowl.

Given that we have put our military into a war that they cannot win, we need to cut our losses and withdraw before we lose one more of our brave soldiers.

This is not to say that we should give up in the war on terror, but to ask, "Why should we keep recruiting fighters for the other side?"
